It’s hard to believe, but just over an hour from Melbourne’s international airport you can find yourself in true rural Australia – and in the centre of one of the country’s best wine regions.
Heathcote is a leisurely 90-minute drive from Melbourne’s city centre and just half an hour from Bendigo. It’s the perfect location for a great day trip, or a weekend recharge.
At the southern gateway to the region you will find friendly Tooborac, a great place to stop for craft beer, cellar door wines or good food.
When you’re heading north towards the Murray, call in at the Toolleen pub to meet the locals and have a great feed.
If you don’t have a car, buses come and go daily from the town centre taking you to Melbourne, Bendigo, Shepparton or beyond.
Another alternative if you’re coming from Bendigo and would like to take in the fresh air, is to walk or get on a bike and enjoy the historic O’Keefe Trail. This 49-kilometre trail between the two towns is a leisurely ride and we can recommend stopping at the charming Axedale Tavern on the way for a little refresher!
