Hiding in Plain Sight: A selection of works from the Michael Buxton Collection will present a range of works from 2002 – 2015. This snapshot of the Michael Buxton Collection will showcase the forefront of Australian contemporary visual practice and highlight distinctive qualities of the Collection.
From Mikala Dwyer’s eccentric lamp sculptures and giant wall necklace to David Noonan’s dramatic jute collage, a broad range of media from the work of influential and acclaimed painters and sculptors will be featured.
Recent acquisitions such as Jess Johnson’s complex work on paper, The Wurm turns Against and Justene William’s humourous performance videos will be presented alongside a number of works that have been in the collection for a longer time such as Hany Armanious’s sculpture Effigy of an Effigy with Mirage, Callum Morton’s Screen #22: Smokescreen and Nicholas Mangan’s Mutant Message.
An important characteristic of the Collection is its inclusion of a number of large-scale installations, as well as major series of works. Louise Weaver’s vast installation, Taking a Chance on Love and Ronnie Van Hout’s, Bed/Sit will be represented in this show alongside Marco Fusinato’s series of 10 works on paper Mass Black Implosion (Anestis Logothetis) and 7 works from Tony Garifalakis’s Mob Rules. Many of the works being presented have never been exhibited in Victoria including the works by; Ronnie Van Hout, Justene Williams and Ricky Swallow.
This major exhibition of 16 leading Australian artists will be a highlight of Bendigo Art Gallery's 2015 program.
